Alexandrite is one of three members of the Chrysoberyl family, none of which resembles the another. Each of the three posses a quality that makes it desirable and valuable: one changes color, another is chatoyant (cat's-eye), and the last is a brilliant transparent gem. Alexandrite is a transparent gemstone with a dramatic color-changing property of changing from brilliant green in daylight to cherry-red under tungsten or artificial incandescent light.
This is influenced by the light spectrum: daylight contains blue light while incandescent light has a red tone. The most dramatic color change occurs in thicker gemstones. Alexandrite was discovered in Russia in 1831 and named for Czar Alexander II of Russia, as it was supposedly found on his birthday.
